Children's rights events - Autumn 2010

The Children's Rights Alliance for England is holding two events this autumn: a working seminar on the Equality Act 2010 and our annual conference which is this year focused on children and young people's civil rights. Speakers include Sarah Teather MP, Minister of State, Department for Education and Dr Penelope Leach, psychologist and writer. Discounts are available for CRAE members. Empowering children and young people to take up their rights

21 April 2010

Today CRAE launches its 2010 You’ve got the Right programme, aimed at empowering children and young people under 18 in England to take action to uphold their rights. You've got the Right started in 2008 with the launch of the first ever national telephone and email advice service for children and young people in England on human rights and equality law, which has so far dealt with hundreds of enquiries. This year, we are expanding the programme to include our popular children's rights training (NEW and improved!) and the development of a NEW national network of lawyers for children's rights.

Equality Act receives Royal Assent but excludes under-18s from age discrimination protection

13 April 2010

The Equality Act 2010 received Royal Assent on 8 April. The Act, which brings together all existing discrimination legislation and extends protection from unfair treatment, explicitly excludes children and young people from legal protection from unfair discrimination on the grounds of age.

Political parties probed on commitment to children’s rights

The Children’s Rights Alliance for England (CRAE) has today written to the children’s leads of the three main political parties asking them to set out their general approach to children’s rights should they form the next Government. CRAE plans to publish the responses in the week of the General Election.

Local councils and others must follow children's rights

1 April 2010

Following lobbying by the Children's Rights Alliance for England, regulations that come into force today (1 April 2010) require local authorities and their partners (the Children's Trust Board) to have regard to the Convention on the Rights of the Child when preparing, reviewing or revising their plan for local children's services.
