Children's rights events - Autumn 2010
The Children's Rights Alliance for England is holding two events this autumn: a working seminar on the Equality Act 2010 and our annual conference which is this year focused on children and young people's civil rights. Parliament gains access to child restraint manual

The Government has agreed to make a copy of the Physical Control in Care manual, governing the use of force on children in secure training centres, available to MPs and peers. The announcement was made in response to a parliamentary question from crossbench peer Baroness Stern, following briefing from the Children’s Rights Alliance for England (CRAE). Documents placed in the parliamentary library are available to the public.
Green MP calls for ban on corporal punishment in child prisons

Yesterday, Green MP Caroline Lucas asked the Justice Secretary whether there should be a ban on corporal punishment in privately-run child prisons and young offender institutions, following the release of the Physical Control in Care Manual to CRAE. She also probed whether Ministers plan to establish a public inquiry to investigate the extent to which children's rights under Article 3 of the European Convention on Human Rights have been upheld.

Children's Commissioner review a chance to strengthen rights protection

The Government has announced today (12 July) that Dr John Dunford, currently General Secretary of the Association of School and College Leaders, will undertake a review of the Office of Children's Commissioner. In the announcement, Education Secretary Michael Gove emphasised both the Government’s commitment to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and its belief that ‘it is vital that children and young people have a strong, independent advocate to champion their interests and views and to promote their rights’.
