Government Committee says that children's rights is lacking in social work training
The Children, Schools and Families Committee has published its report into the Training of Children and Families Social Workers. It has accepted evidence, given by CRAE in its submission, that children's rights is an area of deficiency in social work degree courses.
CRAE's national coordinator, Mike Lindsay, in welcoming the select committee's findings commented that:
"It is unthinkable, given the growing catalogue of public child care failures in this country, that children's rights is still not yet an integral part of the training that all children's social workers (and directors of children's services) receive. Not only does this deficiency risk local authorities, at times, putting 'best value' before children's 'best interests', but it also often exposes a lack of understanding of, or sufficient regard to, our responsibilities and duties towards some of our most vulnerable children".
