“Professionals overwhelmingly in favour of children’s rights”
Delegates, attending a prestigious Westminster Briefing event yesterday on "Developing the Children Plan" organised by the House Magazine, voted in support of children's rights. The event was represented by professionals from education, healthcare and children's social care and their responses given in the Interactive Voting Session reveal a very strong sense of commitment to children's rights.
When asked: Which is the best reference for telling what rights children should have? 52% said the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child as against only 17% who thought it was the Children's Plan; or 7% domestic legislation and 24% parents.
When asked: Who is better placed for telling us whether what we do for children is truly "world class"? 48% voted for the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child, 19% said inspectors, 31% answered service providers and commissioners; whilst only 2% thought that it was the UK Government.
When asked: What one thing would you like to see us do to mark the twentieth anniversary of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child later this year? 61% of delegates wanted to see an All-Party commitment to the full implementation on the UNCRC as against only 4% who felt that the day should be celebrated with a top-level Government conference on Every Child Matters.
Mike Lindsay said that: "These very encouraging messages reinforce the one that CRAE recently received through its national survey of Directors of Children's Services (which generated 140 responses) on the local implementation of the UNCRC, indicating a distinct trend and momentum towards making children's rights an integral part of informing what we do for children in this country."
