Major charities call for children's rights convention to be made part of UK law

The Children's Rights Alliance for England (CRAE) has formed a coalition with major UK charities and children's rights activists calling on the Government to make the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child part of UK law. The coalition responds here to the Government's new Green Paper on a future Bill of Rights and Responsibilities and considers the opportunities it presents - and misses - for children in the UK.
Government misses opportunity to protect children in custody

The Government has today ignored its human rights obligations to children in secure training centres (STCs) by endorsing the use of deliberately painful restraint techniques by prison staff on children as young as 12 (so-called ‘pain compliant’ techniques).

The European Court of Human Rights today gave a landmark ruling on the UK police retention of fingerprints and DNA samples. The case was brought by two Britons, ‘S’ and Michael Marper, who had both been arrested and had fingerprints and DNA samples taken under police powers introduced in the Criminal Justice Act 2003. S was aged 12 when he was arrested.

House of Lords dismisses Government appeal on child restraint in custody

The House of Lords has refused the Government permission to appeal against the Court of Appeal's judgment in July 2008 which quashed new rules introduced by the Government allowing the restraint of children in secure training centres for the purpose of ensuring good order and discipline.
