Bill of Rights could strengthen the rights of children

The coalition Government's full agreement, published today, announces a Commission to investigate a British Bill of Rights which would build on all of the rights in the European Convention on Human Rights. The Children’s Rights Alliance for England welcomes this as an opportunity to consider how the Human Rights Act has improved children’s lives and to agree additional protection for children and others. We have long campaigned for the Convention on the Rights of the Child to be part of UK law.

Government refuses to release human rights advice on sex and relationships education

11 May 2010

The Government has today refused the Children’s Rights Alliance for England’s request for details of legal advice given to Ed Balls MP when, as Children’s Secretary, he was considering limiting parental powers to withdraw children from sex and relationships education. CRAE’s Freedom of Information Act 2000 application was turned down by the Department for Children, Schools and Families on the basis that it would be against the public interest and could have ‘a corrosive effect on the conduct of good government’.

Children's Rights Bill to be debated in Parliament

5 March 2010

The Children’s Rights Bill was due to receive its second reading in the House of Lords today and bring hope for rights protection to some of the UK’s most vulnerable children. Unfortunately the Bill will not be debated today due to lack of time, but Baroness Walmsley is hopeful of getting an alternative date for the debate later this month.

Get ready for Parliament!

5 February 2010

On Tuesday 2 February at an event in Parliament, Get ready activists called on the Government to do more to protect and respect children’s rights. On behalf of over 200 young activists involved in CRAE’s Get ready project, Adam, Daniel-Sean, Imogen, Sana and Rhasan launched the Get ready for action! report, which presents the findings and recommendations from three campaigns run by children and young people over the last year. They set out their demands of Government in relation to children’s human rights, and spoke about the impact children have had on the United Nations reporting process for the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
