Briefing on girls and younger children in "secure colleges"

Author: CRAE, SCYJ, PRT and the Howard League for Penal Reform Date: November 2014

The Criminal Justice and Courts Bill creates secure colleges as a new form of youth custody. These will be huge children's prisons in which the Government intend to detain 12 to 17 year old girls and boys.

Last month the House of Lords voted to exclude girls and younger children (under 15 years) from the secure college. Our joint Briefing with the Standing Committee for Justice, the Prison Reform Trust and the Howard League for Penal Reform urges members of the House of Commons to keep this amendment when they debate the Bill on Monday 1st December.
